Born in Jacksonville, NC on March 1, 1963, and raised in Texas, Sara Hickman was destined to be in the arts. She was a vocal major in High School and received a BA in painting in college. At the age of 14 she landed her first paying gig. She came to national attention in 1988 when she independently released her first album, ‘Equal Scary People,’ which was picked up by Electra Records. Her song ‘Simply’ propelled her into the mainstream. Sara has toured nationally and also opened up for Nanci Griffith and Dan Fogelberg.

In the NYC area you might have heard her on WFUV, where her music caught the ear of DJ Liz Opoka. The success of  her first album raised the eyebrows of the folks at Elektra records. In 1990 Sara released ‘Shortstop,’ which garnered critical acclaim. The single off that album, ‘I Couldn’t Help Myself,’ was an Adult Contemporary hit. After its release, Sara was dropped from the label because of creative differences. An extremely strong and confident woman, she moved on from there.

Capitol Police Officer Eugene Goodman

To date, she has released 22 albums; one of them, ‘The Best of Times,’ is a double CD of Texas musicians covering her music. The list is a who’s who of artists including Willie Nelson, Robert Earl Keane, Shawn Colvin and Lyle Lovett. Sara has also released children’s music: ‘Big Bird Little Bird and ‘Newborn, Too.’  Having always been an activist, she recently released the song ‘The Good Man” about Eugene Goodman, a Capitol Police Officer who redirected violent insurgents away from members of Congress.
